The Oosterweel connection has been announced for several years as "the construction site of the century." Due to its scale and numerous fields of expertise, it is a unique project—not only in Flanders but even within Europe. It is a true feat of engineering. All conceivable technological and construction innovations are being employed to create a smoother, safer, greener, and healthier Antwerp region.
With several key interventions, the Antwerp Ring will finally be completed. A new highway tunnel will be constructed under the Scheldt, providing an additional crossing option alongside the Kennedy Tunnel and the Liefkenshoek Tunnel.
The Ring will be better integrated with its surroundings, using new tunnels and by covering or lowering certain sections. In areas where no covers are planned, green embankments will be created to reduce noise and keep the Ring out of sight.
The design process has carefully considered the environment: how can we create more space to make the area more enjoyable for residents and passersby? Where the Ring is covered, vast new areas will be available for walking, playing, cycling, and sports. This is a major improvement for the city and its inhabitants.
Oosterweel is not just for motorists. It will become easier to leave the car at home and opt for shared bikes, trains, trams, or buses instead. The project includes the construction of 35 kilometers of new bike paths, bridges, and tunnels, along with better public transport connections.
